Failure Mode and Effects Analysis

FMEA is a systematic method of identifying and preventing product and process problems before they occur. Ideally, FMEA is conducted during the product design or process development stages, but substantial benefits can still be achieved by analysing existing products and processes. FMEA is one the five core tools in the ISO automotive quality standard TS16949.

Design FMEA

Design FMEA is focussed on identifying potential design weaknesses that could lead to a product failing to function as intended. The approach should start early in the design process with a comprehensive identification of product functions and continues through the design process.

Process FMEA

While a very similar approach to DFMEA, Process FMEA is focussed on identifying potential process weaknesses that could result in a failure to produce a product to specification. Again the approach should start early in the development of a new process.
